JAMIE SCHMIDT

--------

THE LAST COWBOY LEFT

Money has dark eyes, you once said

So I thought you must have blue.

It was you who told me the truth about cowboys.

And when you left,

I figured that you were a cowboy too.

One who made all the wallflowers feel lucky

who flirted with the punch pourers of the world just because.

You were the only one who jumped through my concrete

and licked the mud off your fingers afterward

and of course, got away with it all

Blaming it only

on the last cowboy left.

--------

TAKING OUT THE BLUE

You can't take the blue out of the green to get the light

You can't suck the sky out of grass to catch the sun

No more, I wish I hadn't said that

No more regret

Above all, no more taking out the blue

Trying not to eat my own heart out again

I want the true romantics to come forth

You know these people

The ones who get drunk off rain

Because when all that's left at the end of tonight is just a run down pen

Then I might as well have a few saps around

Because after tonight

I'll be taking out all the blue.
