TRUE LOVE JACK

Kerouac's truest love
was the kiss
he gave the page

STUFF LIKE THAT

In college Neil Shilling
would stick a J
then make the sign of
the cross
followed by three quick
bows of his head
thumping his heart
as he retreated to play D
sometimes I played Shilling
well and sometimes he got
by me
but I never countered with a
novena of my own
when I took him to the hole
and scored myself
if you're a decent young
poet and think you're
connected to god
you're supposed to know
stuff like that

HAVE A NICE LIFE

when the girls are young
they don't want boys
they want men
when the girls are women
they don't want men
they want boys
when the boys are ready
they don't want girls
they want women
when the boys are men
they don't want women
they want girls
if the boys and girls
make it
and get what they want
they become men and women
that want it all the time
so to all those boys and girls
that want it all the time
I say

have a nice life

================

PRAY AND FIGHT

eventually you begin to
torture the roaches
keep time with the pressure
and embrace the tornado
at this point
a science called sin
enters the self
consciousness
put that in
your oven of love
my sweet child
hope that it gently
warms as a smile of sun
upon a growing tree
kiss it with your spirit
and pray my sweet child
and fight my sweet child

================

PARTY

there were lavish women
hanging around
women that nobody
could touch
and lovely men
that nobody
could handle
and there was this one
couple that came in
clown costumes because
they thought the party
was something else
and that group
in the corner
by the piano
remember them?
the ones that kept falling
down, saying wait till
tomorrow
we'll remember the words

ONE NIGHTER

do you want to get high, she said
sure, he replied
what do you do? she said
I write, he replied
what do you write? she said
poetry.
how can you afford to do that? she said
I'm terminally rich.
a rich poet?
I have a trust fund.
you don't seem like the trust fund type.
My trust fund's in my head, he said
I'm going to Germany in three months,
she replied.
why Germany?
I like changes.
Am I a change?
do you believe in life after death? she asked.
I believe in life after life, he said.
is that poetic?
If you want it to be.
i'm a stylist, she said.
What's a stylist do?
Come here sweetheart, she said. and
pulled him closer.
nobody's ever called me sweetheart like
that before, he said.
that's what a stylist does, she replied.
You're tall.
So?
So if we combine genes I think we could raise
a tall enough heir to make it in the NBA. We
could plan our lives around his salary, or hers.
Fine. she said.
Do you want to hear some poems?
The poems are great, but I'd really
like to get laid.
They smiled like new bungalows
Do you love me? she said
Of course, he replied
She put on her shades, got in her car and
pulled away.
He waved.
She honked.
It was perfect.

BEETHOVEN

Beethoven heard it
in fact he
heard it
all the time
so he finally
made himself
deaf
over it
but he still
heard it
and that's it

================

MOZART

leave me! he said

only Mozart can comfort me

now.

================

TCHAIKOVSKY

your piano

your pain

your sugar plumb

fairies

================

THE MAGIC

when Pythagoras
got the angle right

he offered 100 oxen
to the muses

thanking them for
the inspiration

of taking the horizontal
nature of experience

and translating it
into numbers

deep within the magic

(and 3 from the Bk. of God)

================

MOVE ON WITH HIS LIFE

the ultimate sign of god
would be for god to
give up the godliness
set up a paradise
with no rules
where innocence and
knowledge work together
to better understand
self consciousness
enjoying every tree
the great spirit put there
knowing eventually we're
go to try it anyway
rewarding us rather than
punishing us
for tasting it
as we're makin' it
then god could finally put
closure on the human race
and move on with his life

SELF PORTRAIT

one personal tear
in the mind of the missing
one personal light
in the mind of the found
in front of you lies
the chemistry for success
a self climax waiting
for a new sun
a king or queen moment
when we see beyond what
we see
when you live
you live forever
when you die
you do not die in me
ingest your soul forever
eat your dream
digest your fantasy
