FOUR WORKS
BY BESS KEMP

STRUCK

night
hammers on
it is lonely
in the dark
no intimate whispers
or anything
strong enough
to break the heaviness
of alone

================

SHE WEEDS

pulls at yesterday's
tough stalks
protects her newly grown resolve
her will
to remain here
a fixture
grown leathery brown
in the hard sun

she weeds
and wheezes
coughs at what is gone
stooped over
and still
in the dirt

================

ESCAPE THE ONLY WAY I KNEW

my memories of that place
and time
are layered like
my clothes in the suitcase
i stole from your closet

your finger tips
created a puzzle
i never solved

so i ran

made it out to california
bringing everything
that meant anything
with me

you were just
an illusion
torn from the pages
i never wrote
in my diary

i am not lost without you

AFTERNOON

we went out in the rain
running errands and
mulling over circumstance
the drizzle left us lifeless
and limp under our umbrellas
but the needs were there
the ones egging us on
making us take this trek
bread milk cigarettes
the mere necessities that make life
a liveable ordeal
we were out to hunt
and gather like tribesmen
and soaked to the underwear
we continued on
hoping for a good sale
to ease the bleakness
we wore like raincoats
